Fluorescent Tubes Light Up By Themselves

March 31, 2009

This installation is pretty simple. It just takes advantage of an amazing electromagnetic situation created by high voltage power lines. 1301 fluorescent tubes were placed in a grid under power lines in the UK. They don’t need to be plugged in to light up because the electricity escaping from the powerlines is strong enough to excite the mercury vapor inside, causing them to fluoresce. The piece was made by artist Richard Box.
