Yayoi Kusama at Gagosian Chelsea

May 7, 2009

I love Yayoi Kusama. The way she creates installations is an inspiration to me. She always uses the entirety of the room, covering the walls with polka-dots and repetitive patterns. This was the first time I got to experience one of her fully immersive lighting installations. A 10′ x 10′ room is built within the gallery. The 4 walls and ceiling are mirrors. There is a small standing section in the center of the room, and around it, a black rubber floor contains a shallow puddle. The water adds to the effect of the reflective walls and ceiling. Hanging from the ceiling are dozens of “candles” (probably LEDs). When the door is shut and the lights are turned off, the effect is incredible.
